Mirnyi Advances First at Marseille

On Monday at the Open 13 in Marseille, Max Mirnyi became the first player to advance to the second round.

On a day that featured only one main-draw singles match at the Open 13 on Monday, Belarus' Max "the Beast" Mirnyi became the first player of the tournament to advance to the second round, with a three-set 7-6(6), 6-7(5), 6-3 victory over Spain's Jacobo Diaz.

With the win, Mirnyi awaits an opponent from No. 1 seed Magnus Norman's opener against Belgium's Olivier Rochus.

In doubles on Monday, the unseeded pairing of Australia's David MacPherson and South Africa's Grant Stafford scored the first upset of the tournament, with a straight-set 7-5, 6-2 dismissal of the No. 3 seeded South African team of David Adams and Marius Barnard.

The Czech Republic's Tomas Cibulec and Leos Friedl also advanced, with a 6-2, 6-1 taming of French wild cards Sebastien de Chaunac and Sebastien Lami.

Monday's play at Marseille also featured the final round of singles qualifying, as No. 1 qualifying seed Bob Bryan and Frenchmen Jean-Rene Lisnard, Nicolas Mahut and Lionel Roux all secured places in the main draw.
